(New) Uganda - Microlot - Kigezi Valley
In the far southwest of Uganda, the Kigezi Highlands stretch across several districts and border Rwanda to the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. Nestled between the terraced hills, Kigezi is among the most breathtaking landscapes in East Africa. Some have called it the “Switzerland of Africa”. Amidst this landscape live over 300 smallholder coffee farmers who partner with the Mountain Harvest Network. Microlots of coffee from this region are selected for standout cup quality. In Uganda, naturally processed coffees are carefully sorted, often using float tanks to remove defects before drying. And this coffee bean has a natural dry processing method. After drying, the fruit is removed from around the bean. This allows the fruit of the cherry to spend a longer amount of time impacting the bean, creating a unique flavor. This attention to detail makes this coffee some of the cleanest naturally processed tasting coffees in the world.
Today, the “Gorilla Highlands” of Western Uganda is being transformed beyond tourism. A new story of Ugandan coffee is being told. We hope you enjoy this secret gem from the high-altitude landscapes of Southwestern Uganda. Let us know what you think!
