(New) Mexican FTO Women Producers
This Fair-Trade Organic (FTO) Mexican Coffee is from The El Triunfo Reserve Project. This is a Women’s Co-op of Coffee Producers from the Chiapas Region.
This Co-op of women coffee producers yields premium organic beans hand-picked, sorted, and grown on farms that average 4 hectares or less. There are 32 communities represented by this Mexican FTO offering. The co-op started as a small project of 6 women coffee farms and now has 224 women-run farms producing high quality coffee. Some are widows, some are private landowners, some have partners and husbands that have emigrated for other work opportunities. These co-ops represent a massive step toward increased empowerment for women in Mexico. The women involved in these co-ops are also investing in the healthcare of women in their region. They have developed a health initiative to combat the high prevalence of cervical cancer in their community; and they have programs to take care of mothers who hold the families together.
The story to tell isn’t only one of women rising up together to improve their lives and the lives of others; it is also a story of passion and love. These women have been working with coffee for most of their lives. They understand its viability, the need for focused labor, and the importance of management in terms of both time and money. They also adhere to quality standards that are pushing for that perfect cup.
The farms are located in the buffer zone of El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, which is in the highlands of the Sierra Madre. it is one of the most diverse forest reserve areas in the world and contains Mesoamerica's largest cloud forest, as well as a protected natural environment for thousands of plant and animal species. All of the coffee produced here is shade-grown to help produce this mellow cup of organic coffee. Let us know what you think!
